How to Boost Productivity with Office Lighting

How to Boost Productivity with Office Lighting

There’s much more to lighting than flipping a switch on and off. It’s impossible to concentrate if a bright light is shining in your eyes. But it’s equally difficult to stay alert if the lights are too low. When considering how to boost productivity, you need to look beyond cubicle designs and ergonomic chairs. The wrong lighting can not only make it harder to see, but it can lower moods, make employees feel sick and decrease the overall morale.

However, there are ways to use your lighting to maximize your employees’ potential. Custom Electrical Services commercial electrical contractors in Utah can lead you through your full options, but here are some ideas for how to utilize lighting to increase your company’s productivity:

Embrace Nature

While natural light is always preferred, it’s not possible to have everyone next to the perfect window setup. However, lights can create the same effect. LED light bulbs are beneficial because they are much less glaring than fluorescent bulbs. LED lights are also much more environmentally friendly. They last at least ten times as long as other bulbs and are easier on the eyes.

Keeping mood and energy levels up is especially important in the winter when the short days already give you less access to sunlight. LED lights can be adjusted throughout the day, making the workplace feel more natural, even if it’s dark outside.

Do you ever feel that mood boost when the sun comes out after a week of storm clouds and rain? The proper lighting can mimic that same change.

Try Customization

Depending on the configuration of your workplace, different areas may have different needs. Your employees may also have their own ideas about what lighting would be best for their areas.

Commercial electrical contractors in Utah can help add customized lighting that can boost productivity by meeting different needs throughout the day. Controlling dimness can prevent more strain on the eyes while still keeping people awake. Additionally, what works at the customer-facing part of your business will differ from what works for a windowless IT department.

Customization doesn’t mean allowing every employee to control the dimness of a different corner of the workplace or change their own bulbs. Still, you may consider asking your employees for ideas. Custom Electrical Services can then take those ideas into account to help you draft a plan to meet the needs of your office.

Pay Attention to Color Temperature

Have you ever stared in the mirror in a public restroom and been taken aback by how sickly your skin looked? That's one example of how color temperature affects us. Finding the right bulbs for your space isn't just about making your employees look good, though — it's about helping them be comfortable and productive.

Want a more relaxing atmosphere? A warm yellow or orange light will help. Blue and cool, white lights boost alertness and energy. In the morning, try a cooler light to wake your employees up, then adjust to a warmer light later in the day. While a jolt of energy is good during the early hours, keeping cool lights on the entire day will cause strain on the eyes. Again, LED lights are ideal for this sort of setup. These adjustable lights are helpful for creating the ideal type of lighting at the right time of day.

Consult a Professional for the Best Setup

Commercial lighting can easily be overlooked but can have big repercussions on productivity in the workplace. Tired employees will be less motivated to give their best, but too bright lighting will tire out the eyes and cause headaches. A good lighting setup will lead to employees calling out sick less, will boost mood and lead to more focus.

Customized lighting installed by commercial electrical contractors in Utah can maximize a space's potential to be more productive. When you work with Custom Electrical Services of Utah, we can consult on lighting design, rewiring and installing new outlets. Our experienced, certified electricians will help with any needed repairs and installation.

While it is good to brainstorm ideas yourself, electrical work is best left to a professional. It's a dangerous undertaking on your own — and you're risking more than your safety. Incorrect wiring can electrocute you, cause burns or cause a fire. There are also permits you may need to obtain to legally begin the work. Instead, call Custom Electrical Services today to learn more about what will work best for your office.

Had these guys and gals help me update my electrical as well as run some power out to a shop. The whole process was super smooth, Kourtnie nailed the paperwork side of things (even got a permit and inspection that I had no idea we needed) and Cory was great to work with on the installation side of things. The price was the same from the original bid all the way to the final product, which is always nice. The work itself was exactly what we agreed upon. Really nothing but good things to say about my whole experience. Would totally recommend these guys to any of my friends!

We are so appreciative of the work that Morgan and his team did on behalf of Custom Electrical for our new home. Custom Electrical provided a thorough, exact, and honest/fair bid right from the start, and they stuck to it! We had a budget, and they respected it. They were always timely and very professional. Attention was paid to every detail, and they made sure things were just how we wanted them. They went above and beyond in so many ways, from being patient with our kids running around to coming back an extra time to make sure everything was just right. We will be recommending them to everyone we know. Thanks you guys!

5 stars and a forever customer! My family moved into an older home and we've had Custom Electric over several times to help get our home working a bit more how I would like it. I appreciate that I am always able to get someone to my home quickly- whether it's to install a light switch or rewire an entire room. Everyone who's been in my home has been professional, friendly, and consistent in their quality work. Maybe most of all, I am grateful for the honest communication and great customer service! After the last visit, I had some concerns that were cleared up right away with kindness and respect (especially for dealing with a not so electrical savvy me). I would send everyone I know and love who have electrical need to Custom Electric- they won't let you down!!

These guys/gals are always very helpful. I got a tech out to the house same day I called to repair a GFI receptacle that kept tripping open. Cory (technician) troubleshoot the problem, corrected it and was gone in about 30 minutes. I have used them for other projects with no complaints. I use them without hesitation for any electrical issues.
