DIY Electrical Home Repair: Is It Worth The Savings?

The Risks of DIY Electrical Work

DIY home improvement projects have become an increasingly popular trend among homeowners. While building furniture, painting, and basic home renovations can offer cost-saving solutions, DIY electrical work should be avoided.

Attempting to complete electrical work, such as rewiring, installing lights, and replacing outlets, may seem like a simple project, but in reality, it poses significant risks to homeowners' safety and their homes. Keep reading to learn more about the benefits of hiring a professional electrician.

Why DIY Electrical Work Is Dangerous

Homeowners who perform electrical work without proper training are exposing themselves to safety hazards and potential consequences that could result in the forfeiture of their insurance coverage. Always leave electrical work to licensed electricians; here’s why:

  • Risk of Electrocution: Electrocution is one of the most common hazards associated with electrical work. Handling live wires without proper training, equipment, or personal protective gear puts homeowners at risk of fatal electrical shocks.
  • House Fires: Amateur electrical repairs may inadvertently cause devastating house fires, putting lives and property at risk. Fires can be caused by mistakes like improper connections, overloaded circuits, and faulty wiring.
  • Code Violations: Electrical work must comply with strict building and residential codes. DIY repairs are often not up to code and fail inspections, requiring homeowners to pay for professional fixes to meet compliance standards.
  • Voided Warranties and Insurance Claims: Home insurance policies and appliance warranties typically stipulate that electrical work must be performed by a licensed electrician. Homeowners who perform electrical work may void their policies and warranties, leaving them financially liable for any issues that arise.

The Cost of DIY Repairs

Hiring a licensed electrician may seem expensive, but it saves money and protects homeowners from long-term consequences. Here are some hidden costs of DIY electrical work:

  • Repairs for DIY Mistakes: Hiring an electrician to redo or correct electrical work will usually cost more than hiring one from the beginning, and can delay project completion.
  • Damaged Appliances or Systems: Improper installations or wiring can damage expensive appliances or compromise the home’s electrical system. Homeowners will then be responsible for the expenses of replacement and repairs.

  • Time and Stress: DIY electrical work demands time, effort, and specialized tools that homeowners must purchase. Homeowners may easily become overwhelmed or make unsafe decisions unknowingly, leading to increased stress and uncertainty about the safety of their home.

Why You Should Always Hire a Licensed Electrician

Relying on professionals for electrical work provides homeowners with peace of mind and preserves policies and warranties against future issues. They can guarantee the safety, quality, and reliability of a home’s electrical systems. The benefits of calling in professionals:

  • Expertise and Training: Professional electricians have extensive training and experience, which enables them to confidently diagnose and repair damaged electrical systems with minimal risk to home safety.
  • Compliance with Safety Codes: Local electricians are familiar with local building codes and safety standards, ensuring homes meet the highest standards and are as safe as possible.
  • Reliable Results: Professional electrical work is usually backed by warranties in the event of recurring or future issues, ensuring lasting results and providing an extra layer of security for homeowners.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Routine inspections can identify potential problems early, helping to avoid large repairs down the road. Regular maintenance can also extend the lifespans of electrical wiring and appliances and keep homes up to date on new safety features.

Had these guys and gals help me update my electrical as well as run some power out to a shop. The whole process was super smooth, Kourtnie nailed the paperwork side of things (even got a permit and inspection that I had no idea we needed) and Cory was great to work with on the installation side of things. The price was the same from the original bid all the way to the final product, which is always nice. The work itself was exactly what we agreed upon. Really nothing but good things to say about my whole experience. Would totally recommend these guys to any of my friends!

We are so appreciative of the work that Morgan and his team did on behalf of Custom Electrical for our new home. Custom Electrical provided a thorough, exact, and honest/fair bid right from the start, and they stuck to it! We had a budget, and they respected it. They were always timely and very professional. Attention was paid to every detail, and they made sure things were just how we wanted them. They went above and beyond in so many ways, from being patient with our kids running around to coming back an extra time to make sure everything was just right. We will be recommending them to everyone we know. Thanks you guys!

5 stars and a forever customer! My family moved into an older home and we've had Custom Electric over several times to help get our home working a bit more how I would like it. I appreciate that I am always able to get someone to my home quickly- whether it's to install a light switch or rewire an entire room. Everyone who's been in my home has been professional, friendly, and consistent in their quality work. Maybe most of all, I am grateful for the honest communication and great customer service! After the last visit, I had some concerns that were cleared up right away with kindness and respect (especially for dealing with a not so electrical savvy me). I would send everyone I know and love who have electrical need to Custom Electric- they won't let you down!!

These guys/gals are always very helpful. I got a tech out to the house same day I called to repair a GFI receptacle that kept tripping open. Cory (technician) troubleshoot the problem, corrected it and was gone in about 30 minutes. I have used them for other projects with no complaints. I use them without hesitation for any electrical issues.
