How to Deal with an Electrical Emergency

Electricity is an essential part of our daily lives, but it can quickly become dangerous during an electrical emergency. Read on to learn more about the types of electrical emergencies to watch out for and steps to take during such situations, brought to you by our experts at Custom Electrical Services .

What is Considered an Electrical Emergency?

Electrical emergencies can pose a serious risk to the safety of yourself and your home, so it is essential to understand what constitutes an electrical emergency and how to respond A few common emergencies can include:

Downed power lines are dangerous - contact emergency support like Custom Electrical Services .

Electrical Fire

An electrical fire is a severe emergency that can quickly escalate and endanger lives and property. Common signs include smoke, sparks, and the smell of burning. Electrical fires require immediate attention; your priority should be your safety and the safety of those around you.

Electrical Shock

Experiencing an electrical shock is a serious situation that can result from faulty wiring or coming into contact with live electrical components. Signs of electric shock may include tingling sensations, muscle contractions, or even loss of consciousness. This emergency requires prompt action to prevent further harm.

Downed Power Lines

Strong winds, storms, or accidents can cause power lines to fall to the ground. Downed power lines pose a significant risk as they may still be live and capable of conducting electricity. If you come across a downed power line, keep your distance until professionals deem them safe.

Water Damage

Water and electricity are an especially hazardous combination. Any situation involving water damage and electrical circuits can lead to electrocution or electrical fires. Flooding, leaks, or damaged electrical appliances require immediate attention to minimize the risks.

What to Do During an Electrical Emergency

Electrical emergencies demand swift action and a cautious approach to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you. Here are a few immediate steps and important things to keep in mind to take after an emergency:

You can always contact a certified professional like Custom Electrical Services to help.

Cut the Power

In any electrical emergency, your first step should be to cut off the power supply. Locate your main electrical panel and turn off the circuit breakers or remove the corresponding fuses. This step is crucial to prevent further electrical hazards

If There is a Fire, Extinguish It

In the event of an electrical fire, never attempt to put it out with water, as this can exacerbate the flames. Instead, use an extinguisher rated for electrical fires, such as a Class C extinguisher. If the fire is spreading rapidly or if you're uncertain about your ability to control it, evacuate the area immediately and call emergency services.

Don't Touch Anything

Avoid touching any electrical equipment, outlets, or exposed wiring during an electrical emergency. Even seemingly harmless components can carry dangerous levels of electricity.

Call for Emergency Services

It's important to note that attempting to fix electrical problems yourself can be extremely dangerous. You should always prioritize your safety during an electrical emergency and leave electrical repairs to licensed professionals. As soon as you have ensured your safety and cut off the power, call emergency services for assistance rather than taking on the issue yourself.

Did a great job installing my new service panel. In my experience with Custom Electric, I found them to be: * Responsive & Prompt * Excellent customer service when you call their office * Good, quality work (and I'm picky) Good to find a business that really 'cares' about the customer and the quality of work. Will call on them again.

We called Custom Electric to fix a Generac whole house generator for my mother, Dianne Giles. The receptionist that took my call was very helpful and courteous and promptly put us on the schedule. Dakoia came out to do a diagnostic and maintenance on the generator. He was very pleasant to work with and answered all my crazy questions. I now have a much better understanding of the system because of his detailed explanation. He was very good natured about me hanging around and watching. I wanted to learn how to do the maintenance on the generator myself in the future, but as Dakoia pointed out that there's a lot more details that he goes into, rather than just changing the oil and filter, We have decided it's worth having them continue to do the maintenance each year. Thank you for the great service!

In the world of contractors it seems almost impossible to find a company that is professional, timely and competent. Not only does Custom Electrical give you an exact time and day they will show up but then they actually arrive at the day and time they set. It sounds like common sense but from my experience it is very rare. From wiring a detached garage with a basketball court and automated lighting to a house remodel Custom Electrical has been phenomenal.

Had these guys and gals help me update my electrical as well as run some power out to a shop. The whole process was super smooth, Kourtnie nailed the paperwork side of things (even got a permit and inspection that I had no idea we needed) and Cory was great to work with on the installation side of things. The price was the same from the original bid all the way to the final product, which is always nice. The work itself was exactly what we agreed upon. Really nothing but good things to say about my whole experience. Would totally recommend these guys to any of my friends!

We are so appreciative of the work that Morgan and his team did on behalf of Custom Electrical for our new home. Custom Electrical provided a thorough, exact, and honest/fair bid right from the start, and they stuck to it! We had a budget, and they respected it. They were always timely and very professional. Attention was paid to every detail, and they made sure things were just how we wanted them. They went above and beyond in so many ways, from being patient with our kids running around to coming back an extra time to make sure everything was just right. We will be recommending them to everyone we know. Thanks you guys!

5 stars and a forever customer! My family moved into an older home and we've had Custom Electric over several times to help get our home working a bit more how I would like it. I appreciate that I am always able to get someone to my home quickly- whether it's to install a light switch or rewire an entire room. Everyone who's been in my home has been professional, friendly, and consistent in their quality work. Maybe most of all, I am grateful for the honest communication and great customer service! After the last visit, I had some concerns that were cleared up right away with kindness and respect (especially for dealing with a not so electrical savvy me). I would send everyone I know and love who have electrical need to Custom Electric- they won't let you down!!
